Tips On Keeping The World's Oceans Alive
Keeping the world's oceans clean is not just the responsibility of governmental agencies. More than 40 years ago, the popular television program "Flipper" brought awareness to environmental issues, making the lovable dolphin the first television star to promote environmental consciousness by educating viewers on the dangers facing aquatic environments.
Those same teachings hold true today. With millions of people engaging in outdoor activities in oceans, rivers and lakes throughout the year, there are plenty of things that individuals can do to make sure that the marine mammals that inhabit these bodies of water are protected. For example:
1. Don't trash the ocean. Discard refuse properly once you return to land, rather than at sea, and recycle or reuse as much as possible. Trash can harm marine life. Seabirds, turtles and other marine life often mistake Styrofoam pellets and other plastic debris for food and ingest them, which can injure or even kill the animals.
2. Discard of waste properly. What goes into the gutter ends up in the ocean, so keep trash and waste materials off the street and out of the storm drains.
3. Operate your boat in a way that keeps the water clean and doesn't harm marine life. Make sure your boat is fuel efficient, in good working order and doesn't leak oil, gasoline or other hazardous materials into the water. Switch from a two-stroke to a four-stroke engine, which burns cleaner and is more fuel efficient.
4. Dispose of waste in the right places. Observe local and federal waste disposal rules; use pump-out stations for your boat or RV. While people are seeing a renewed interest in doing the right thing for our world and all the creatures in it, this attitude is not new.
